Calming the Chaos of the Holiday Season
These writing prompts help remind us of why it can be ‘the most wonderful time of the year’. Let’s really embrace that, and let go of the idea that our holidays are only as good as our ability to complete every last pre-holiday to-do on our list.
Reflect. Think about what you’ve accomplished this year. It could be something small like starting to meditate 5 minutes a day, to navigating a major life change - pick one to write about and why it means so much to you.
Get Excited. What are some of the scents, sights & sounds, and traditions of the holiday season that bring you a sense of comfort and joy? How can you incorporate them into your home and daily life?
Out of your mind and onto the page. ‘Emptying out’ is a technique where you take everything swirling around in your mind - ideas, to-do’s, questions, about something upcoming and you ‘dump’ it all out onto paper. With the holidays nearing, you may have some anxiety about all that needs to be done, so try ‘emptying out’ all those thoughts on paper. Come back to it later and sort out what are your must do’s and nice to-do’s, and of course your ‘not gonna dos’ 😉
Nostalgia Vibes. Write about one of your favourite past holidays memories and why it makes you feel happy. Is there a way to recreate that feeling or experience this year?
Pause. In the midst of holiday chaos, what is one mindful thing you can do for yourself to create a sense of calm?
Simplify. What is one thing that always gets rushed or stresses you out during the holidays? Or something you find you spend a lot of time on with very little return. How can it be minimized or avoided altogether?
Think Ahead. What is one thing you want to start in the new year? Just write it down and put it aside for now, don't think about it until the new year.
