We’ve all had our bouts of depression or at least moments of despair at some point in the last 10 months, is that true? Hopefully, for many of us, we are able to turn to our closest ones or employ strategies that help us bounce back and stay positive. For some, that’s not so easy.
Data collected through a nationwide survey on the mental health impacts of COVID-19 done by the Canadian Mental Health Association in partnership with UBC researchers showed that 40% of Canadians say their mental health has deteriorated since March, and sadly, 10% have had recent thoughts or feelings of suicide.
Discovering this information was moving and made me determined to do something to help. Since we support a different cause every season in association with our quarterly subscription boxes, we thought it would be appropriate to direct 5% of sales of our Winter 2020 edition subscription box to an organization that supports mental health. And the tie-in with our Winter collection theme “Love for All” made this decision even more fitting.
We came across EveryMind, an organization that inspires hope by leading in the delivery of high quality mental health services for infants, children, youth, young adults (up to age 25) and families in the Region of Peel since 1985.
A representative confirmed to us that “there has been an increased need for mental health support. Children and youth are not immune to the negative impact of the pandemic, and those who suffer with pre-existing mental health conditions, are even more vulnerable to coping with this crisis. We continue to witness a surge in mental health needs and expect this to only increase over the next months and even years.”
EveryMind continues to provide support to their community by offering a wide range of services for those in need. This includes phone and video counselling, workshops and webinars for caregivers, and more.
